Magnet Programs
Magnet Programs and Schools are located throughout Dade County. They
attract students who are interested in studying specialized fields such as mathematics,
science, engineering, foreign languages, architecture, marine sciences and the performing
and visual arts. Racial balance is a consideration in placing students in a magnet
program/school. Student transportation is provided according to established guidelines.
Student programs/schools recruit students from within limited and specific boundaries;
however, three of the districts total magnet schools, Design and Architecture School
(DASH), Maritime and Science Technology (MAST) and New World School of the Arts, recruit
students from the entire district. Click here for more information on Magnet Schools.
Community Programs
Parent-Teacher Associations (PTA) and Parent Teacher-Student
Associations (PTSA) operate at the schools and district levels to promote quality
education and to bring the home and school into a closer working relationship.
The School Volunteer Program offers the opportunity
for interested parents, nonparents, college students and senior citizens to spend time
helping students and teachers. Several thousand citizen volunteers donate at least two
hours a week to supervise field trips, tutor students, help in the library, perform
clerical work and support a variety of school activities.
Ambassadors for Public Education is
a program which was developed as a unique effort to interface each school with its
community.
An ambassador is a trained and knowledgeable volunteer community
member who performs a two-fold function. Ambassadors work to keep local businesses, real
estate firms, and civic organizations informed about neighborhood school activities. Of
importance to a newcomer m the area, ambassadors area available to answer questions about
their schools programs, staff and students. This knowledge from a parental
perspective can provide valuable information for new parents moving into a specific
attendance area.
Private
Schools
Dade County has over 486 private schools which offer an abundance of
choices. College preparatory programs for all levels, religious oriented education, and
programs for students with special needs and requirements are available for those choosing
an alternative to public education.
